Budapest Christmas markets 2026: which ones are worth it

Blog lists rank them all the same. Here is every market in the guide with our honest verdict, 2025 prices and this season's dates (checked Oct 2026). The full guide adds the map, transit, food, kids' tips and Christmas-week hours.

Advent Bazilika Christmas market, Budapest
St Stephen's Basilica · Szent István tér

Advent Bazilika

The showstopper: a light show on the Basilica's façade every half hour.

Budapest's best-known market fills the square in front of St Stephen's Basilica. After dark the façade becomes a screen for a light projection that repeats every half hour from 17:30. In 2025 it also had a 12 m tree, a light tunnel, a nativity scene and around 100 craft stalls.

Season: 13 Nov – 1 Jan (2026, official)
Hours: Sun–Thu 11:00–22:00 (Fri–Sat until 23:00)
Getting there: M1 Bajcsy-Zsilinszky út (or M1/M2/M3 Deák tér)
Don't miss: The façade light show, from 17:30
Skip if: You hate crowds. Weekend evenings are packed: go on a weekday before 17:00, then wait for the first show.
Vörösmarty tér Christmas market, Budapest
Vörösmarty Classic Xmas · city centre

Vörösmarty tér

The classic fair with Gerbeaud on the corner. Also the priciest.

The traditional city-centre fair fills the square at the start of Váci utca, next to the famous Gerbeaud café. Craft stalls run until 28 December, then the square turns into a New Year's Eve party. Local press says most visitors are tourists, and prices are the city's highest.

Season: 13 Nov – 28 Dec (Then a New Year's party)
Hours: Sun–Thu 11:00–21:00 (Fri–Sat until 22:00)
Getting there: M1 Vörösmarty tér
Don't miss: Cake at Gerbeaud, on the same square
Skip if: You're on a budget. A chimney cake in the Deák tér underpass costs about half the price.
Winter Experience Park · by Deák tér

Városháza Park

An ice rink and market in the City Hall park. 2026 dates not yet announced.

In 2025 the park beside the old City Hall held a Christmas market, an ice rink and light projections on the City Hall façade. Sources disagree on when the market closed (10 or 31 Jan); the rink ran to 31 January. We'll update this page when 2026 is announced.

Season: TBC for 2026 (2025: from 14 Nov, rink to 31 Jan)
Getting there: M1/M2/M3 Deák tér (~2 min walk)
Don't miss: Skating under the City Hall façade
Skip if: It hasn't opened by the time you travel. The Basilica is 6 minutes away.
Design market · Jewish Quarter

Gozsdu Udvar

Design, vintage and retro stalls in the bar district's passageways.

Gozsdu Udvar is a chain of courtyards between Király utca and Dob utca, the heart of the nightlife district. In 2025 it held a December design and vintage market. Come for gifts nobody else will have, then stay for a drink in a ruin bar nearby.

Season: TBC for 2026 (2025: 6–30 Dec)
Hours: Not yet published
Getting there: M1/M2/M3 Deák tér (~5 min walk)
Don't miss: Local design and vintage finds
Skip if: You want a classic Christmas market. This one is about design and bars.
Buda Castle Christmas market, Budapest
Advent in the Castle District

Buda Castle

Quiet stalls in the old Castle District, with the best views in town.

A small Advent market on Szentháromság tér and around the Castle District, up on the Buda hill. Sources disagree on the exact 2025 dates, and 2026 isn't announced yet. Even without stalls, the walk from Matthias Church to Fisherman's Bastion is one of the best winter views in Europe.

Season: TBC for 2026 (2025: late Nov – early Jan)
Hours: 9:00–19:00 (Lit up after 16:00 (2025))
Getting there: Bus 16 from Deák tér (Stop: Dísz tér)
Don't miss: Fisherman's Bastion at sunset (about 15:55)
Skip if: You only have one evening. It's quieter and smaller than the Pest markets.
City Park Ice Rink Christmas market, Budapest
Városligeti Műjégpálya · City Park

City Park Ice Rink

Skate in front of a fairy-tale castle on one of Europe's largest open-air rinks.

Not a market, but a Budapest winter classic: the big rink in City Park, in front of Vajdahunyad Castle. Széchenyi thermal bath is next door, so you can skate, then warm up in 38 °C water. In 2025 the Varázsliget kids' park with rides and a mini train ran nearby (5 Dec – 1 Jan).

Season: TBC for 2026 (2025: late Nov – 1 Mar)
Hours: Session times (Check before you go)
Getting there: M1 Hősök tere (or Széchenyi fürdő)
Don't miss: Skating at night under the castle lights
Skip if: It's a session gap. The rink closes between sessions on some days.
Óbuda Christmas market, Budapest
Advent Óbudán · Fő tér

Óbuda

The locals' market, with a free ice rink. Opens 27 November.

Óbuda's Baroque main square hosts a neighbourhood Advent market with a free ice rink, weekend concerts and a visit from Mikulás on 6 December. Fewer gift stalls than the centre, but real Budapest families and fair prices.

Season: From 27 Nov (2025 closed 23 Dec)
Hours: Mon–Fri from 14:00 (Sat–Sun from 10:00 (2025))
Getting there: HÉV H5 Szentlélek tér (or tram 1)
Don't miss: The free ice rink
Skip if: You're going after 23 December. It closed for Christmas Eve in 2025.
