Christkindelsmärik Christmas market, Strasbourg & Colmar
Place Broglie · the original, since 1570

Christkindelsmärik

France's oldest Christmas market, under its famous glowing arch.

Strasbourg's Christkindelsmärik dates back to 1570 and has stood on the Place Broglie since 1871. It's the largest of the city's markets: Alsatian crafts, decorations, bredele biscuits and vin chaud under strings of lights.

Season: 27 Nov – 24 Dec (Opening day from 14:00)
Hours: Daily 11:30–21:00 (24 Dec until 18:00)
Getting there: Tram B/F Faubourg National (Broglie stop closed in market hours)
Don't miss: The illuminated Christkindelsmärik arch
Skip if: It's a Saturday afternoon. Come on a Monday or Tuesday, the quietest days.
Cathedral Market Christmas market, Strasbourg & Colmar
Place de la Cathédrale + Place du Château

Cathedral Market

Stalls in the shadow of the 142 m Gothic cathedral spire.

Chalets run along rue des Hallebardes and rue Gutenberg to the cathedral, where the historic St Nicholas market (Klausenmärik) was held. On the Place du Château you'll find the famous Christmas-decoration shops. Watch the astronomical clock's apostles at 12:30.

Season: 27 Nov – 24 Dec (Same hours as Broglie)
Hours: Daily 11:30–21:00 (24 Dec until 18:00)
Getting there: Tram A/D Porte de l'Hôpital (~8 min walk)
Don't miss: The astronomical clock at 12:30 (€2)
Skip if: You want space. These narrow streets are the busiest in town.
The Great Tree Christmas market, Strasbourg & Colmar
Place Kléber · Village du Partage

The Great Tree

A 31 m tree, and chalets run by 110 charities.

The Grand Sapin, a giant fir from the Vosges, towers over Place Kléber. Around its base, the 'Village du Partage' gives its chalets to 110 charities in turn, so your vin chaud supports a good cause.

Season: 27 Nov – 24 Dec (Tree lit into January)
Hours: Daily 11:30–21:00 (Tree lit until midnight)
Getting there: Tram C/E/F République (or Faubourg de Saverne)
Don't miss: The Great Tree after dark
Skip if: You want shopping. It's more about the tree and the charities.
Petite France Christmas market, Strasbourg & Colmar
Place Benjamin Zix + Saint-Thomas

Petite France

Half-timbered houses, canals, and the city's prettiest photos.

Small markets fill the old tanners' quarter at Place Benjamin Zix and Saint-Thomas. Nearby, the 'Irréductibles Petits Producteurs' market sells only products made in Alsace: hot apple juice, biodynamic wines and more.

Season: 27 Nov – 24 Dec (Same hours as Broglie)
Hours: Daily 11:30–21:00 (24 Dec until 18:00)
Getting there: Tram A/D Ancienne Synagogue (~6 min walk)
Don't miss: The lock next to Benjamin Zix, the best photo spot
Skip if: You're in a hurry. The lanes are for wandering.
Food market · Palais Rohan terrace

Quai des Délices

The food-only market, with about 400 stars along the river.

On the Palais Rohan terrace and Place du Marché-aux-Poissons, this market is all about eating: Alsace wines, bakers' bredele, white mulled wine and a pop-up bakery workshop. The 'promenade aux étoiles' hangs about 400 stars along the quays (2025).

Season: 27 Nov – 24 Dec (Same hours as Broglie)
Hours: Daily 11:30–21:00
Getting there: Behind the cathedral (~3 min walk)
Don't miss: White mulled wine with an Alsace Riesling base
Skip if: You've already eaten. Come hungry.
Carré d'Or Christmas market, Strasbourg & Colmar
Place du Temple Neuf · decorated streets

Carré d'Or

The most extravagantly decorated streets in the city.

The 'Golden Square' between the cathedral and Place Broglie: shopkeepers compete with over-the-top window displays. Rue des Orfèvres is the most decorated street. Upmarket food gifts too: foie gras and marrons glacés.

Season: 27 Nov – 24 Dec (Same hours as Broglie)
Hours: Daily 11:30–21:00 (Shops keep their own hours)
Getting there: Between Broglie & cathedral (~3 min walk)

Place Grimmeissen · ethical market

Marché OFF

The alternative market: vintage, second-hand and social-economy stalls.

In shipping containers and domes, the Marché OFF sells vintage, second-hand and social-economy goods, with a sensory 'Safe Zone' and a parent-and-baby space. A breather from the crowds.
