Nuremberg Christmas markets 2026: which ones are worth it

Blog lists rank them all the same. Here is every market in the guide with our honest verdict, 2025 prices and this season's dates (checked Oct 2026). The full guide adds the map, transit, food, kids' tips and Christmas-week hours.

Christkindlesmarkt Christmas market, Nuremberg
Hauptmarkt · the famous one

Christkindlesmarkt

Germany's most famous Christmas market, under the Frauenkirche.

Red-and-white striped stalls fill the Hauptmarkt in front of the Gothic Frauenkirche. Only traditional Christmas goods are allowed: no rides, war toys, balloons or plastic tableware. On the opening night (27 Nov, 17:30) the Christkind opens the market with a prologue from the church gallery.

Season: 27 Nov – 24 Dec (2026, official)
Hours: Daily 10:00–21:00 (24 Dec until 14:00)
Getting there: U1 Lorenzkirche (~5 min walk north)
Don't miss: The opening prologue, Fri 27 Nov at 17:30
Skip if: You hate crowds. Avoid the opening weekend and Saturday evenings; weekday mornings are calmest.
Sister Cities Market Christmas market, Nuremberg
Markt der Partnerstädte · Rathausplatz

Sister Cities Market

Food and crafts from Nuremberg's twin towns, from Glasgow to Kraków.

Right beside the Hauptmarkt on the Rathausplatz, each stall represents one of Nuremberg's partner cities: think Scottish shortbread, Polish pottery, Italian treats and Czech glass. A good break from bratwurst and Lebkuchen.

Season: 27 Nov – 23 Dec (2026, official)
Hours: As main market (Closes a day earlier)
Getting there: Next to Hauptmarkt (~1 min walk)
Don't miss: Something you won't find at any German market
Skip if: You only want German tradition. Stick to the Hauptmarkt.
Kinderweihnacht Christmas market, Nuremberg
Children's Christmas · Hans-Sachs-Platz

Kinderweihnacht

The children's market: a tiered carousel, steam train and baking.

A separate market just for kids: an old-fashioned tiered carousel, a mini Ferris wheel, a steam train, the Nikolaus house and baking and craft workshops. Next door, the Sternenhaus runs a children's programme of fairy tales, magic and puppet shows (28 Nov – 23 Dec).

Season: 27 Nov – 30 Dec (2026, official)
Hours: 10:00–21:00 (24 Dec until 14:00 (2025))
Getting there: ~5 min east of Hauptmarkt (Over the Pegnitz)
Don't miss: The Christkind's visit, Tue–Fri 14:30
Skip if: You're travelling without kids. It's built for them.
Feuerzangenbowle Christmas market, Nuremberg
By the Fleischbrücke · on the river

Feuerzangenbowle

A giant kettle of flaming rum punch on the Pegnitz.

Feuerzangenbowle is red wine punch with a rum-soaked sugar cone set alight over it. Nuremberg's version is brewed in an enormous kettle by the Fleischbrücke, and it stays open later than the main market, with a big New Year's Eve party in 2025.

Season: TBC for 2026 (2025: 28 Nov – 31 Dec)
Hours: Sun–Thu 11:00–21:00 (Fri–Sat until 23:00 (2025))
Getting there: Fleischbrücke (~3 min from Hauptmarkt)
Don't miss: Watching the sugar cone burn
Skip if: You don't drink alcohol. Try Kinderpunsch at the main market instead.
Jakobsplatz · with a Ferris wheel

WinterDorf

A 38 m Ferris wheel and huts, open into January.

A winter village of huts around a 38-metre Ferris wheel on Jakobsplatz, at the western edge of the old town. It opens two weeks before the Christkindlesmarkt and runs until 6 January, so it's your Christmas fix after the main market has closed.

Season: 12 Nov – 6 Jan (2026, official)
Hours: 11:00–21:00 (Fri–Sat until 22:00 (2025))
Getting there: U1 Weißer Turm (~2 min walk)
Don't miss: The Ferris wheel view over the old town
Skip if: You want the tradition. It's more of a fun fair than a Christmas market.
Fürther Freiheit · next-door town

Fürth

A relaxed local market one U-Bahn ride away.

Fürth is Nuremberg's twin city, joined by the U1. Its Christmas market on the Fürther Freiheit square is smaller, cheaper and far less touristy. Dates come from an unofficial listing, so check before you go.

Season: 26 Nov – 23 Dec (Unofficial listing)
Hours: Daily 10:00–21:00 (Unofficial listing)
Getting there: U1 to Fürth Rathaus (~15 min ride)
Don't miss: A Glühwein with locals
Skip if: You only have one day. Stay in Nuremberg.
Waldweihnacht · Schlossplatz

Erlangen

A 'forest Christmas' market among fir trees, 20 minutes by train.

Erlangen's Waldweihnacht fills the palace square with fir trees and wooden huts, for a cosy forest feel. A good half-day trip if you're staying several days. Dates come from an unofficial listing; check before you travel.

Season: 23 Nov – 24 Dec (Unofficial listing)
Hours: Mon–Thu 10:00–21:00 (Sun from 11:00; 24 Dec until 14:00)
Getting there: S-Bahn or regional train (~20 min)
Don't miss: The fir-tree setting
Skip if: You're on a short cruise stop. It's outside your ticket zone and time.
